artist statement
 

I am a mixed-media artist working in both two and three dimensions, using watercolor, oil and chalk pastel, ink, collage, and block prints. I have also created textiles and wearable art in woven wool and eco-silk. I’ve always gravitated towards something I can make my own, the way a certain combination of genes and the multitudes of cells give us our identity. The multitude and combination of art-making processes excites and inspires a finding of myself over and over, evolving my identity and creating an intimacy within the process. A constant curiosity and sense of surprise at “mistakes” turn into new ways of working. An eternal experimentation carries my sense of self and how I relate to the world, forward.

I find my work going further in the direction of abstraction, but also returning to my roots in abstraction—something coming full circle. I’ve come to a point in my life where Time has more meaning and consequence than at any other time­—of greater value and lesser amount—so I want to find out as much about who I am in the time I have through this process called art.

Dante talks of entering “the steep and savage path”. I think the most meaningful art begins on this path, with gnashing and scratching through to the other side in whatever takes visual shape.
